3-28-2008: Covering Water

Richard “Mo Fish” Gidrey and I started out our day in the Laguna Madre, just outside of Corpus Christi. The morning was crisp and cool and the skies were overcast. Winds were out of the South East at 10 mph and Tony D was our cameraman. We shot the trip on video and captured an awesome story on film.

We fished live shrimp under a popping cork. We used Mid Coast Corks that are a very unique design. They require you to tie the main line and the leader to the top of the cork. We used 30 lb braided line and 40 lb mono as a leader. These Mid Coast corks enabled us to make some really long casts to get our bait in the strike zone.

The day started out with fish in numbers but no real size. We kept moving around. We fished Pita island, Pure Oil Channel, Emmords and still seemed to only find smaller fish. Our determination was strong and we ran further south to the Bird Island Basin. We kept on the move in search of some fish of size. As it turned out, King Ranch Shoreline held some specks in the slot but we wanted Big Fish.

The key was finding fish around the rocks. The rocks in Baffin Bay can be very treacherous when it comes to running at speed. They can also be very important in finding fish of caliber. We worked the rocks and keep moving around. Our persistency paid off and we found 6 birds working over a school of fish. One bird was sitting on the water and the others were air-born.

After two casts, both Rich and I were hooked up on 26 inch plus Redfish. Soon after we landed those fish we caught 4 other big reds and Rich then landed a 27 inch Trout. Our persistency paid off, we had a 35 mile boat ride back to the boat ramp but we were all smiles.

Today was an example of the necessity to “Cover Water” to find fish of caliber.

We will air this show this year on Fox Southwest.

Thanks for your time and…. We’ll See You… On The Water !!
